March Madness 2010
Snow
is melting by the buckets and we are packing
up the mushing gear. Spring is in the air
and our females are in season! Oh boy, what
fun. Marley managed to pull off one breed
win at the Tanana Valley KC in Anchorage
with his handler, Ms. Courtney Dowling, having
one hand inoperable and despite all the other
distractions.
January 2010
The new year is starting off on the right
foot in the show ring for 'Marley'
as this young boy, who is just coming into
his prime, pocketed two BOB's; go Marley!
We have made the decision to try a series
of sprint races on the local circuit. Betweem
running a hospital, managing my wife's
travel schedule and airport shuttle runs,
and of course, training commitments with
the dogs, this seemed to be the most practical
approach this winter.
The dogs just love the sprints! It helps
center all of us, once again, that this is
supposed to be fun! The Rosie X Moxie kids
are just terrors in harness (thank you again,
Marlytuk!), and that is Tess, Phoebe and
Ringo. Add to the mix Louie who is derived
from prime Stormwatch genes, and Marley,
who has some racing genes from Tasman, and
we have a good core group of dogs to work
with for the shorter races.
A big thank you to Greg & Marty Rhyne
who have been helping us with set ups at
the sprint races, as well as the usual training
routines.
December 2009
Finally made it onto sleds by mid-December!
Wishing all of our friends and family a joyous
holiday season season and Happy New Year!
November 9, 2009
We have had the most wonderful late summer
and autumn one can remember in many, many
years in Southcentral Alaska! The warm temperatures
have been difficult for those teams training
up for the major distance races and Iditarod/Quest
qualifiers. Regardless, winter has arrived
and we have a dusting of three inches on
the ground this morning.
Marley does it again! That's right, you
guessed it, BIS/BISS Tamarak's Just Jammin'
took his 2nd BEST IN SHOW November 8, 2009
at the Cook Inlet Kennel Club. Thank you's
go out to Judge David Bolus for Best of Breed;
Judge Kay Radcliffe for the Group 1; and
Judge Annella Cooper for the BEST IN SHOW!
Pictures will be posted in a few weeks. Drew
Dowling, the patriarch of the Dowling family,
handled Marley as Courtney was under the
weather. Thank you Drew!
Spring-Summer
Wrap Up
What a summer it has been at Kaliya
Siberians. Everyone remained healthy, wealthy
and wise!
We expected Marley to have a great run
in the show ring, but this handsome boy exceeded
all expectations: a BEST IN SHOW, two BISS,
three Group 3's. three Group 2's, and one
Group 1. Above all else, Marley enjoyed every
moment being in the show ring under his capable
handler, Ms. Courtney Dowling. According
to the data published in the latest issue
(September 09) of SiberiansUSA, Marley is
ranked #11 in Breed Points and #10 in All
Breed Totals. Not all that bad for a four
month stretch! By the way, if you haven't
already done so, check out www.SiberiansUSA.com as a resource for the Siberian Husky.
Phoebe finally decided to strut her stuff
in the ring and finished her AKC Championship.
Did you ever carefully watch a litter in
process, and somehow have a gut feeling this
one little puppy that just came out was going
to be special? This was my instinct on the
arrival of Ms. Phoebe, and I fell in love
with this girl at the moment of birth! I
can sit on the outdoor deck all day and watch
this girl move.
All the show and grooming supplies are
neatly stored for the time being as we prepare
to start training up in harness. We managed
to get in one early morning run on September
7th before the temps climbed above 50 degrees.
It has been a terrific summer in Eagle River,
Alaska and the daytime temps still remain
in the high 60's. Regardless, leaves are
turining yellow and falling to the ground
with the slightest breeze, so our time is
coming soon!
